In the Barolo area, with several vineyards spread over the territory, Mauro Mascarello, great-grandson of the founder, has been managing the Giuseppe Mascarello family winery for 60 years, which has been active for over a century and a half in the beautiful Langhe area. The illustrious surname, a thoroughbred Piedmontese, in addition to an oenological experience that few can boast, is a guarantee of quality, accuracy, and traditional processing. Mauro, who has been in the cellar since he was a child, is now joined by his wife Maria Teresa, an accountant, and his children Elena and Giuseppe, who are in charge of the production. Mauro, already in the 70s, was among the first to bottle Barolo from a single vineyard.
The Giuseppe Mascarello winery owns several vineyards for 13 hectares: from the historic Monprivato vineyard, located in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto, active since 1666 and purchased by the Mascarello family in 1904, to the more recently acquired sites. Here the cultivation of the vines follows strict processing rules to obtain the best results and a yield that does not exceed 60/65 quintals per hectare: very short dry winter pruning, summer thinning, manual harvest, elimination of imperfect bunches, limited use of pesticides and fertilizers, no use of herbicides, natural organic fertilization. In the Monprivato vineyard, we also find an exceptional selection of a Nebbiolo Michet clone used for its great Barolos. Accuracy, rigor, and respect for tradition also determine the production phase: long vinification carried out under strict supervision of the oenologists and aging in large barrels.
The finesse, detail, and personality of Giuseppe Mascarello’s wines, capable of thrilling even the most demanding drinkers, are the result of tested and refined techniques, part of a story that has continued since 1881 and which never ceases to excel and fascinate.
