The family company Hofstätter has for more than 100 years been synonymous with quality wine from Alto Adige. The founder, Josef Hofstätter, was originally a blacksmith, while the wine was made in his spare time and sold at his wife’s inn. At this time, the vineyards of the Hofstätter were located on the west side of the river Adige. In 1959, a relative of Josef Hostätter married Paolo Foradori, whose family had been producing quality wine from fields on the east side of the Adige for decades. This marriage has meant that Hofstätter today has 45 hectares of the best vineyards in the area – primarily spread over the four properties, Kolbenhof, Barthenau, Yngram, and Steinraffler. The head office of Hofstätter is located in Termeno.
As one of the first producers in Alto Adige, Hofstätter chose to vinify individual vineyards. This has made it possible to produce prestigious cuvées that each bear the name of the respective vineyards, among other things. Gewürztraminer Kolbenhof, Pinot Bianco Villa Barthenau, Pinot Nero Vigna S. Urbano Barthenau and Lagrein Dunkel Steinrafler.
At Hofstätter, they are convinced that it is in the vineyard that the great work must lie to ensure a high quality of the wine. In addition, biological pest control is used. In general, in the future, the aim is exclusively to produce wine from organically grown grapes. That in this process you do not compromise on quality anywhere, you only have to taste a simple bottle to make sure.
In addition to Hofstätter maintaining an extremely high level throughout its range, Pinot Nero produces Vigna S. Urbano Barthenau, some of the best Pinot Nero wine in Italy. In fact, Pinot Nero was introduced for the first time in Alto Adige for approx. 160 years ago by Cavaliere Ludwig Barth von Barthenau, who then owned one of the fields that hofstätter possesses today. The name Barthenau thus has a direct link to this first planting.
