In the province of Agrigento, more specifically the city of Grotte in Sicily, the Morgante family has grown and traded wine for five generations. However, it was not until 1994 that Antonio and his two sons Carmelo and Giovanni chose to market their wines under their own name. The property has 200 hectares, of which 30 are used for wine production and the rest for grain and almond production. The wine production is approx. 300,000 bottles annually. From 1997, the oenologist Riccardo Cotarello has been associated, raising the quality further.
All Morgante’s wines are made from the local blue grape Nero d’Avola, also white wine and rosé. The grape possesses many style elements, which are also found in Grenache and Syrah from e.g. Rhône; namely, animalism and “fleshiness” in the case of red wines.
We carry all wines from Morgante. The hectare yield is 54 hectoliters for the wine Nero d’Avola and 35 hectoliters for the top wine Don Antonio. Both wines are already today excellent exponents of how far one can go with Nero d’Avola, but given the short time perspective, the peak has probably not been reached yet. We have always been fascinated by the very precise grape typicality that Morgante always manages to include in its wines. The top wine Don Antonio comes from Morgante’s oldest vineyards and expresses lots of depth and complexity.
